Single Release: Fall Out Boy’s Love From the Other Side

By Elinor Serumgard

Fall Out Boy released their new single, Love from the Other Side, on January 18, 2023. The single is off their upcoming album So Much (for) Stardust and was accompanied by a music video. So Much (for) Stardust is Fall Out Boy’s first full length release since 2018’s MANIA, which received mixed reviews.

Love from the Other Side is a fierce return to Fall Out Boy’s sad rock anthems. The lyrics, “What would you trade the pain for?/I’m not sure” elicit Pete Wentz’s existential angst. The lines “Nowhere left for us to go but Heaven” pull me back to 2007’s Thriller where Wentz penned, “The only thing I haven’t done yet is die”. This new single, though it certainly can stand by itself in a new era, musically parallels Fall Out Boy’s song Alpha Dog. Alpha Dog was released on a 2008 viral campaign mixtape containing demos from Fall Out Boy and other Decaydance artists.

Fans of pre-hiatus Fall Out Boy may be in luck. The band is returning to the Fueled By Ramen label after 20 years and the album will be produced by Neal Avron. Avron worked with Fall Out Boy on From Under the Cork Tree (2005), Infinity on High (2007), and Folie à Deux (2008). Avron’s other pop punk credits include Yellowcard’s Ocean Avenue (2003) and New Found Glory’s Sticks and Stones (2002).

Personally, I like the new single, and I am excited for the new album! I think it is vital that musicians change and evolve, but I am interested to see what a return to Fueled by Ramen and Avron’s production will bring. Cheers to the old and cheers to the new.

So Much (for) Stardust is out March 24, 2023 on Fueled by Ramen/DCD2
